Suzie Pavlov and her husband Richard have turned the warehouse that was once home to the Toby’s Estate headquarters, into Brunswick Food Store, an all-encompassing cafe that sells an impressive array of condiments, coffee and items for you pantry.

The large, cavernous space is surprisingly warm and inviting, with green chairs and polished floorboards offsetting the corrugated iron walls. Proudly occupying the far corner is a 40kg Toper Roaster.

“It’s more for display,” Suzie explains, “but can still churn out a decent batch if needed.” Toby’s Estate, the former owners of the space and current next-door neighbours, supply the cafe with all the beans they need.

Let’s get one thing straight, this may be a food store, but these guys are serious about coffee. The house blend, dubbed Woolloomooloo, is smooth and spicy. They also offer five alternative blends and a rotating single origin. If you enjoy what you’ve sampled, you can take it away. They sell coffee by 250g and they’ll grind it and bag it up for you on the spot.

The Middle Eastern inspired menu is pleasantly unpredictable. From toasted muesli with fresh strawberries and orange blossom yogurt to ful mudammas, a hearty Egyptian bean dish. “If you like what you have here we want you to be able to buy the ingredients here and make it at home”, says Suzie.

As such, a vintage cabinet displays an array of products used in their dishes, from bright pink pickled cabbage to the rosewater they use in their labna, as well as an assortment of exotic spices. There’s also a deli, where you can prepare a mezze plate to eat in or take away. And finally a retail arm with all the usual coffee toys – syphons, pour overs, filters and such.
