Started by the team that has since given us Liar Liar and Three Bags Full, this little gem has since changed hands but is still going strong, proving that you don’t need passing foot traffic to survive. What you need is just an awesome place to eat.

Sitting alone on a busy stretch of road in Alphington, it’s worth stopping to see what the fuss is about. Inside, the excellent 5 Senses coffee (a custom house blend as well as rotating single origins), solid communal tables and a vibrant menu are the sorts of things we like.

With sun streaming through the huge front windows, it’s a particularly nice place to relax while you drink your espresso. But owner Tony McEntee tells us we can expect more filter coffee in the future too. The menu is a point of pride, with all day breakfast and fresh lunch selections.

But the real draw is the courtyard; an unexpected haven frothing with greenery, umbrellas and casual groups of chitchat. Get in early if you want a sunny weekend spot.
