For all its charm and glory, Smith Street is not the kind of place you’d imagine stumbling across a high population of elegantly coloured moths. But tucked unassumingly amid the hustle of Smith Street is Habitat, a new bar and casual eatery where these near-extinct beauties have found a home on the exposed brick walls.

Feeling as though you’ve just stepped into an uptown New York loft, the sleek marble bench tops and timber-framed booths are well matched with high ceilings and light boxes filled with the aforementioned moths.

Looking past the French ciders and wines, Habitat’s piece de resistance is most definitely the vast range of cocktails on offer. Classics such as Singapore Slings, Rob Roys and Hot Toddies sit well amongst the signatures, which include a smoked Old Fashioned, Peppered Moths and cucumber and Campari Martinis.

Food here is made to share. Tasters like baby school prawns and eggplant chips are on offer along with daily seasonal specials like fava bean and garden pea bruschetta with mint and truffle pecorino. And on the weekends, pop in for one of the best Bloody Marys in town.
