Few modern bars capture the glory and warmth of those of a bygone era; Atticus Finch is a pleasing exception. Brunswick’s Lygon Street campaign for the attention of discerning bar goers is fortified strongly by this great bar of old-world feel.
The entrance of detailed glass gives way to a space of cream walls, dark wood and soft lighting, all of which succeed in bringing together a cracking ambience. The library-esque bar stands ready to inform the palate, and the booths sit poised to whisk away the hours of any intimate group. In a great display of balance, Atticus also has a lovely decked courtyard out back for when the sun peeps out.
Imbibers are rewarded handsomely with thoughtfully selected wine, beer and whisky lists which all represent a dedication to quality, balance and unique fare, rather than attempting to sooth common tastes (although there are staples, such as Coopers, that no Melbourne bar can live without).
The food represents a judicious selection of classic continental fare – terrine rubbing shoulders with dolmades, cheese platters and jamon with relative ease. Simple expressions indeed, but a commitment to quality underlies all, meaning flavour is king here, both liquid and solid.
