Toby's Espresso Bar

You might not have noticed this tiny little espresso bar in the city, but it's doing a roaring walk-by trade.

M
aintaining a hole-in-the-wall on Exhibition Street, Toby’s Estate Espresso Bar caters to an enormous walk-by trade with its coffee selected by Toby Smith, who is the man behind Toby’s Estate, and his team. Smith has thriving cafes in Sydney and after setting up here initially in Brunswick has now opened in the CBD on the block in between Bourke and Little Collins Streets. In a small space with a black and white tiled floor and just four tables in the foyer outside the shop, this also an outpost for Toby’s Estate products. Smith started the company in 1998 and sells a good variety of coffee-related wares. They have their own coffee blends and single estate beans from sources which support Fairtrade and ethical, sustainable business practices as well as a selection of teas, drinking chocolate and domestic coffee makers. This isn’t the place for a long leisurely lunch - although there are snacks, savoury and sweet, available - but it’s a great spot for a quick caffeine hit on the run.
