“New York is second only to Paris for the unexpected great food journey. New York beats my expectations every time I am recommended a new place to visit.”

By Harry Azidis, 20th May 2011

F
or each person, the art of travelling well can be measured differently – especially in a place as diverse as New York City, which has the best of everything to offer in art, architecture, entertainment, fashion, food and drink. Once back home, most people like to share their memories with friends by offering their tips and listing their dos and don’ts.

For his new book (which came out a month ago, just prior to the opening of his new Melbourne restaurant) acclaimed chef and restaurateur Shannon Bennett gets together with a group of buddies to share their travel experiences in the Big Apple.

Shannon Bennett’s New York: A Personal Guide to the City’s Best, written with Scott Murray and other friends, is more than your glorified holiday slide night in a book. While it does focus on the chef, the book is not solely an account of an Australian foody travelling to New York to eat; rather, it is a collection of Bennett and his friends’ different views and experiences in the Big Apple. Some are New York insiders, while others are one-time tourists. Some get to see the glitz and the glamour while others settle for simpler fare.

The book also includes some interesting personal notes, such as references to novels and films set in New York, as well as Shannon and Scott's differing views on the top five restaurants.

It’s a nice little entrée to Bennett before he opens his new sky-high restaurant in the Rialto.
