Banish any memories of daggy, fluoro-lit cafeterias – on-campus eating just got hip.

MIT University has long been known as a breeding ground for talented creatives, designers and business entrepreneurs. And a stylish new cafe in the newly refurbished, heritage-listed Francis Ormond Building looks set to inspire a whole new generation of high achievers.

The cafe was named after Charles Henry Pearson and William Emmett Murphy, who were key players in the original foundation of RMIT as the Working Men’s College back in 1887. According to RMIT’s website, the pair were “intellectuals, political luminaries and social reformers” but you certainly don’t need a student card or a strong line in debating to enjoy this place.

With blonde-wood flooring, accents of bright yellow and black and inventive design touches, the smart fit-out makes the most of the lofty space and abundant natural light, and spills out onto a gorgeous landscaped courtyard with ample outdoor seating where students and staff can be found enjoying a few rays between lectures.

Running from breakfast through to late lunch there’s a wide range of fresh, healthy and generous options, all with a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern bent. Coffee too is handled expertly. The bar has been raised.
