NorthSouth Opens Near the Divide
A new eatery has just opened (today) near the Yarra River divide, with some long-term hospitality pros at the helm. W ith a nod to Melbourne’s great river divide, NorthSouth has opened just 150 metres from the Yarra (on the Southside) at the north end of Chapel Street. The space that was the Italian Kitchen has been taken over by two long-term hospitality professionals, Roger Fowler, former General Manager of the Stokehouse and Ron O’Bryan, who was most recently, Executive Chef at St Kilda’s SlowDown!.
NorthSouth is a seven day operation that will provide breakfast, lunch and an early dinner to the residents in the apartment building upstairs as well as giving that particular stretch of Chapel Street some great food, a sharp, mostly Victorian wine list, good coffee and two decent beers on tap. With a 9pm license, this will be an ideal spot for young inner city families for early dinners and people on the way home for drinks. O’Bryan’s short menu has his familiar Italian influenced dishes with the focus firmly on his mantra of ethical, local, seasonal and sustainable throughout which allows a fluidity of flavours, textures and techniques. The long, shallow room is decked out in greens and cream, a simple banquette and unclothed tables with a lot of room for outside dining. The beauty of the combined experience of Fowler and O’Bryan is that you can pretty much guarantee the follow-through for the customer and know-how of execution will be almost innate. Look out for a short, sharp breakfast menu and a few dishes for lunch and dinner that have their signature all over them - our money is on the Wagyu brisket with hot mustard coleslaw. NorthSouth
