A cheap and cheerful Elwood local expands up north to share its gourmet pizzas with Brunswick East locals.

S

ometimes all you need is a good go-to dinner spot for those lazy weeknights, when the thought of stepping anywhere near the kitchen is the last thing you want to do. The newly opened Jimmi Jamz on Lygon Street, Brunswick East is the perfect foil for such a situation.

Following the same philosophy as its southside cousin, Jimmi Jamz offers a similar menu to its Elwood predecessor. The focus here is on gourmet pizzas, all of which go for a bargain at under $10 each. Toppings range from traditional Napoli sauce, basil and bocconcini, to more adventurous toppings like saganaki and roast potato. Plenty of gluten free options are available, so the gluten intolerant diner will have no reason to miss out.

Jimmi Jamz is also open for breakfast seven days a week, with a menu that includes everything from bircher muesli to the rather protein-rich bratwurst and soft-boiled egg with toast.

Designed by Jean-Pierre Biasol, the cosy interior is inspired by French industrial architecture and like the Elwood space, the exposed brickwork and wood behind the bar creates a warm atmosphere designed to draw in foot traffic. It’s not hard to predict that the shaded but bright courtyard will be bustling with the happy hour crowd during the warmer months.

“We wanted to recreate the warm and welcoming atmosphere that we had in Elwood and the unlikely mix of recycled bricks, industrial steel and natural timbers really brings out a warm glow,” notes Biasol.

Owner Vincent Sciglitano, who also owns the Banff Cafe on St Kilda’s Fitzroy Street, operates under a simple philosophy: “Cheap food, cheap wine – give people more for less and they will return.” And with $6 pizza specials on Mondays, Tuesdays and midweek lunch hours, plus killer happy hour deals, that sounds like a plan.
