D
own on the corner of Smith Street and Alexandra Parade is a little pub. Previously Irish in theme, this modest watering hole on the cusp of Collingwood and Clifton Hill has been made-over, to much relief.

Re-opening last week as Gasometer, the building has been taken over by some Melbourne bar types who know best how to reinstate what we like most about pubs. This team includes the joint forces of those with histories at the East Brunswick Club, Shit Town and Horse Bazaar.

Still in their first week of food service, the menu includes some American-style pub food of burgers (meaty NYC style or vegan chorizo), fried chicken, pulled pork and arepas.

There is barn-like feel within the stone wall surrounds at Gasometer; the interior is one of a polished wood bar and floor with a curving bar, long tables and booths in which to drink and dine.

The formula is simple – it’s a clean bar serving pub food in a comfortable environment with a solid selection of beers on tap.
