A bunch of young winemakers are shirking dull wine rhetoric to open their own pop-up cellar door and banquet hall in Fitzroy.

T

he Vinsurgents are a handful of young Melbourne-based winemakers who share a love of Australia’s diverse and vibrant food and wine scene and they are intent on sharing that love. The Barrel Hall, their inaugural project, will act as a cellar door, wine bar, banquet hall and classroom. But really it’s just a space from which they can share their passion for wine.

Starting this weekend, David Bowley (Vinteloper Wines), Barnaby Flanders (Garagiste Vintners), Rory Lane (The Story Wines) and Nick Stock (Archer/Twofold Wines and wine journalist) will be on hand to warmly welcome you into Barrel Hall. They are there to discuss and, of course, consume wine. And don’t worry, they don’t take themselves to seriously. If you’re lucky, they will even open a few mystery bottles to keep you on your toes.

The food will be a constantly evolving affair. Smallgoods, an ever-changing cheese board, bread from Baker D Chirico and juicy Wagyu masterpieces from Brother Burger and the Marvellous Brew will always be available. But more exiting are the revolving guest chefs.

Every Sunday throughout the pop-up, The Barrel Hall will morph into a new venue. To kick things off this Sunday, Izakaya Den’s Simon Denton, will turn the Barrel Hall into an Izakaya, with a three course Japanese sit down dinner. Think bento boxes partnered with sake and Chardonnay (from Simon’s own family vineyard no less) through to Berkshire pork loin paired with Pinot Noir.

Next week, MoVida’s chefs will descend with tins and tinnies to showcase the best of Spanish conservas.

The Barrel Hall will run for 23 days, from October 13 until November 4 and is open from Thursday to Tuesday.

Location
The Barrel Hall is located above Brother Burger and the Marvellous Brew, entrance through the cellar door is via Westgarth Street.
