Eat Designer Pizza at Ladro

Design O’ Pizza at Ladro brings together two of Melbourne’s favourite things – pizza and design – to create a winning combination.

t is fair to say that Melbourne is in the midst of a long love affair with pizza, and it’s easy to see why. We do it well. Design O’ Pizza, running at Ladro Greville as part of the State of Design Festival, has taken this doughy love affair one step further by inviting designers and non-designers to create a pizza relating to the festival theme, ‘Design that Moves’. The parameters are that all entries must be edible and feasible. However, beyond that, there are no boundaries. Entries in previous years have included sweet, coloured, deep-fried, hot and cold pizzas.

Ladro has garnered a glowing reputation in Melbourne for creating some of the best pizzas southeast of Naples, and Design O’ Pizza gives designers the chance to explore more elements than form and function. Indeed, taste, smell, cooking methods, edibility and construction under time constraints are all important factors in the design of a humble pizza. This event encourages designers to think beyond their usual parameters and mediums, and as an additional bonus, gives Melburnians the chance to enjoy a unique, creative feast.

From the entries, five will be short listed and feature at a special lunch on Sunday July 24, as part of a three-course feast including primi piatti, desserts and wines. A single winner will be decided at the end of the event through a public vote and the top entry will be featured on Ladro's menus for one month.
