The Ascot Vale bakery has opened a second shop in North Melbourne serving (almost) 100 per cent vegan fare.

Crumbs Organic Bakehouse in Ascot Vale has won hearts with their 1950s family kitchen style and modern approach to baking. Now they’ve opened a second bakery on Errol Street, North Melbourne with a vegan twist.

Indeed, owners Gerald Borg and Marion Zenaty are doing things a little differently to the Ascot Vale shop – almost all the products in the store are 100 per cent vegan. That said, there are eggs for sale and milk is available for the quality coffee (they use an Espresso Syndicate blend and have a rotating weekly single origin available).

Otherwise, Crumbs sells donuts, cupcakes and brownies all made without eggs (the lemon curd donuts are a dream). Several loaves of bread are on offer – grain, olive, hightops and casalinga – all sourdough, organic, and again, made without the use of any animal products.

Like the original, the space is tiny and sparsely decorated. There’s a bar with bench stools across one side of the room and the counter on the other. It’s easy to miss, but once you’re inside it’s just as easy to fall under the spell of this good quality establishment.
