“Colourphobes beware,” shop owner Julia tweets, of her Gertrude Street French-themed store Dagmar Rousset. This is true. Instantly eye-catching is a handpicked collection of exuberantly coloured or striped knitted garments from Minneapolis-based label ALL Knitwear, which are 100% cotton and of exceptional quality. Other foreign labels include Salasai (New Zealand), Eley Kishimoto (London) and Opening Ceremony (New York).
The clothing store and gallery is painted all white and is refreshingly simple and crisp; a perfect contrast to the surrounds. A large central table holds several objects d’art from the store’s carefully selected range – leather accessories from Sarah Russell, knitted bags by Allysha Cogland, lingerie by Melbourne-based Hopeless and interactive placemats and paper goods by Lowercase. There are felt body parts (from eyeballs to ovaries) in jars from Gemma Patford, who owns label NotToday, and cute, life-sized cake sculptures– both ideal gifts.
The space doubles as a French language school, offering beginner and intermediate courses ($165) or private lessons ($85). All participants receive their own workbook and a 10% discount in-store. Gift vouchers are also available. Enrol here.
Visit this store. It’s one you’ll remember.
