The new Manning Cartell collection for Spring/Summer 12 is a breath of fresh air, with clean silhouettes and muted pastels forming the ultimate summer wardrobe.

e might only just be getting our heads around the colder weather, but fashion designers are forward-thinking creatures. They were done with winter months ago and, although we’ve barely found our coats lurking at the back of the wardrobe, are already revealing their visions for summer.

A fusion of sugary hues and soft tailoring sees Manning Cartell moving in a lighter direction than the label is usually known for next summer. Aptly titled Pearls and Men, the Spring/Summer 12 range juxtaposes youthful sportswear silhouettes with vintage glamour, all tied together in a sorbet palette punctuated with soft embellishment and the signature Manning Cartell clash of textures and prints.

Pearls and Men feels gentler than the usual Manning Cartell offering, steering clear of the rich palette and sharp silhouettes of the previous collection in favour of a crisp and carefree summer wardrobe. The range features a rainbow wash of lemon yellow, dusty rose and peach, with pops of bubblegum blue and pink sprinkled throughout. The pastel theme is enlivened with a trail of sequins and simple black detailing, while eye-popping graphic prints punctuate the otherwise steady stream of muted colour.

The collection’s innocent flavour is underlined by faintly subversive elements, with flirty triangle bras peek out from behind translucent panelling on oversized tees and flowing blouses. The two-piece suit is given a makeover, with tailored silhouettes paired with a clever functionality central to sportswear. Retro cropped jackets are cheekily matched with high-waisted drawstring shorts, cast in a range of metallics and a striking black and white bamboo motif.

Though Pearls and Men is vastly different to collections past, this label is no stranger to change. Once known for laidback streetwear, Manning Cartell has steadily shifted its focus to become the epitome of clean and casual tailoring that walks the line between youthful and sophisticated. If the new collection is anything to go by, Manning Cartell is turning in an optimistic and decidedly sunny direction.

Pearls and Men will be available in Manning Cartell stores from July.
