To Market, To Market

Taking its cues from a London icon, a new weekend market opens in South Yarra.

By Emma Guthrie, 8th June 2011

A
s marketplaces go, this new Melbourne incarnation has the potential to be one of the greats. Modelled on London’s famed Spitalfields Market and hidden in Oak Place near bustling Chapel Street, the compact South Yarra Market houses a number of stalls showcasing contemporary craft by up and coming local makers, all available to purchase.

Unlike some markets, awash with cheap trinkets and garments well beyond their use-by date, South Yarra’s stallholders offer a range of high quality goods including fashion, art, vinyl and vintage that may be well loved but is still in good nick. The market opens for business at the civilised hour of 11am, so buyers can enjoy a luxurious sleep-in before trawling through tables with like-minded bargain hunters.

There’s a food stall set up alongside a mishmash of lounge chairs, where visitors can enjoy soup or poffertje (mini Dutch pancakes), washed down with a comforting mulled wine or mug of Columbian coffee.

Whilst the opening weekend saw the market get off to a leisurely start we predict rapid growth ahead. Best to get in before the secret gets out.
