he burst of Sydney-like weather on Sunday seemed appropriate for the arrival of eight-year-old label camilla and marc’s first southern outpost, with the presence of the spring 2011 collection on the racks continuing the sunny outlook.

The brainchild of the Freeman siblings, who give the brand their names, camilla and marc is a quintessentially Sydney label known for cocktail dresses and impeccable tailoring. In store, this glamorous outlook continues with the leopard print pantsuit dominating the window display, but any misgivings that things are not quite Melbourne enough are discarded once you walk in the door.

The look is clean and sparse with white, timber-panelled walls and polished concrete floors, brass racks lining the walls and travertine bench tops. The space is meant for lingering; those bare white walls will play host to rotating art, campaign images and collaborations, while the designers’ own vintage magazines and design books are scattered around.

Thought the clothes aren’t quite all basic and black, there is much here to appeal to the Melbourne girl. A 60s vibe permeates the spring 2011 collection with shift dresses, stripes and cropped pants present. Tough motorcycle-inspired pants contrast sheer polka dot blouses, blazers and leg-baring skirts, the aforementioned leopard print and floor-grazing dresses. Accessories will soon arrive, alongside a selection of jewellery including New York’s Pamela Love.

It’s a welcome addition to Melbourne’s retail scene, showcasing sophisticated and luxurious homegrown talent.
