You know those short three minute films that play before every MIFF film? Well this year Focus Forward has collaborated with MIFF to premiere four, three minute films, inspired by the people who act as catalysts for world change. Led by CINELAN co-founders Morgan Spurlock and Karol Martesko-Fenster, the films are shot by some of the worlds foremost documentary filmmakers.
Showing at MIFF will be Fredrik Gertten's The Invisible Bicycle Helmet a film profiling the student inventors of an airbag bicycle helmet, THE AUTO-TUNE EFFECT by Emmy-winner Stanley Nelson, Operation Free Lunch by director Lixin Fan- a film that looks at the impact of social media as a force for good in China and finally The Sky is NOT the Limit by Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern, follows the quest to continue humanity’s exploration of space through private investment and incentive.
In addition to the films being screened, Focus Forward is co-presenting a panel discussion on the art and business of short-form storytelling in the internet age. Called Say It With a Short, this panel will include a special focus on big-screen versus small-screen aesthetics; how to craft stories for maximum impact at shorter lengths; how specific formats like episodic or themed content influence the creative process; and need-to-know advice on the evolving dynamics of cross-platform distribution for emerging and established filmmakers.
