References in Callum Morton’s Valhalla to 1970s American site-specific artist Gordon Matta-Clark figure prominently, and indeed, the conceptual and material groundwork covered by Matta-Clark can be seen as a point of departure for Morton’s own explorations. Best known for his architectural deconstructions or ‘building cuts’ – such as when he vertically bisected a building, or effectively ‘cored’ two townhouses by removing a large cone-shaped section from them – Matta-Clark has been a tremendously influential figure in the development of contemporary art. A literal gag on these experiments, Open House is a collection of video works by the artist that deal with notions of the home.
