Australian Made: 100 Years of Fashion
May 28th — January 30th,

Taking a look at the roots of Australian fashion, 'Australian Made: 100 Years of Fashion' draws on the NGV's collection of fashion and textiles and explores the beginning of the industry and the huge growth it experienced between the 1850s and the 1950s. Tailors, department stores and dressmakers were quick to emerge in the new European society as fashion was an important reflection of status and new found wealth. By the beginning of the 20th century, independent fashion designers were more influential, setting the scene for the vibrant and diverse community that was to come. On display will be clothing and accessories made and sold in Australian during this time, as well as rare examples of early labelled pieces from the mid 19th century.
