Stocking local items and hand-gathered goods from Japan, Europe and beyond, Ganim’s Store houses tableware, books, textiles and artful objects in its unassuming shopfront at the quieter end of Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Eames house blocks and classic Bruno Munari design monographs sit alongside the contemporary – a collaboration between owner Rae Ganim and renowned local illustrator Beci Orpin, Fog linens and Lucy Folk jewellery, to name a few. Ganim hopes to share the story and design philosophy behind each item with her customers, but Ganim’s Store has a surprising energy all of its own.

A celebrated textile and fashion designer, Ganim brings a swag of design coups to her new venture, lending to the idea that this store is decades in the making.

The interior speaks of Ganim’s design wit. Behind the tall bay-window frontage, bleached timber shelving and handsome marble slabs add a quiet sophistication to the playful, power-pink rope looped from the ceiling. Colour – a Ganim signature – is found on the hand-crafted display tables, which are inlaid with vibrant strips of woven textiles courtesy of her textile designer daughter, Sunday Ganim.

Ganim describes her new shop as a general store, though this is a humble appraisal that belies the thoughtfulness behind her curatorship, in which established designers cohabit harmoniously with bright new comers.
