The National Gallery of Victoria’s collection is divided into Australian art, based at the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, and international art on St. Kilda Road. Beyond the ‘water wall’ façade and wishing well ponds at the entrance, the NGV International houses a grid of exhibitions from the permanent collections, as well as innovative and educational temporary exhibitions.

During winter, the NGV International stages a ‘Blockbuster’ exhibition that draws a wide section of the community to view curated work from major artists, such as 2009’s Salvador Dali exhibition Liquid Desire. These exhibitions are accompanied by a host of events, talks, workshops and screenings, catering to all audiences from toddlers (such as the ‘ArtSparks’ Dali-themed art activities) to academics’ lectures.

The NGV International also presents work by significant contemporary international artists. A memorable example was Danish-born artist Olafur Eliasson’s The cubic structural evolution project 2004, which was shown in the gallery’s foyer in 2007. The interactive installation encouraged gallery attendees to contribute to a cityscape built from white lego blocks.

Members of the gallery are able to enjoy a private sitting room with the latest art journals and newspapers, as well as members-only events and discounts.
