Artist Geoff Newton and curator Tristian Koenig established Neon Parc in 2006. Hidden down an unassuming alley opposite a car park, the gallery represents 12 emerging and established Australasian artists, including Paul Knight, Elizabeth Newman and Damiano Bertoli. It also works co-operatively with non-profit organisations and spaces, other commercial galleries and unrepresented artists to stage a varied annual exhibition program. Notable examples include the presentation of 19th century cult English cat-lover and artist Louis Wain’s paintings in conjunction with the Nick Cave-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties 2009, and LEPER/MESSIAH, a gallery-curated exhibition featuring assemblage and collage from three emerging Melbourne artists who share a post-punk aesthetic and sense of humour: Alex Vivian, Alexander Ouchtomsky and Alisdair McLuckie. Newton and Koenig also present contemporary art from overseas, such as Double Diplomacy, an exhibition of Dutch artists Folkert de Jong and and Fendry Ekel, and Billy Apple, an artist who came to prominence on the wave of Pop Art in 1960s New York. In this way, Neon Parc contextualise the work of their represented artists with that of their inter-state, national and international peers.
