Gallerist Nellie Castan established her own commercial gallery in 1998 after having directed Distelfink Gallery in the 1980s and Flinders Lane Gallery in the 1990s. She now represents twenty living contemporary artists, among them significant emerging artist Chris Bond, who was included in New08 at ACCA, and Kate Just, who completed a Gertrude Gallery studio artist residency last year. She also represents indigenous Australian artist Gordon Hookey, whose work was featured in the major exhibition Beyond the Pale: Contemporary Indigenous Art at the 2000 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, as well as the Biennale of Sydney 2004: On Reason and Emotion. Castan’s represented artists are united by their highly detailed, developed practices. Most work in painting or photography. Nellie Castan Gallery is unique in that it provides consultancy services to collectors sourcing artworks from the secondary market and it presents an interesting yearly exhibition program with moments of curatorial experimentation. One such exhibition was Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow, curated by Nellie Castan’s gallery manager and independent curator, Olivia Poloni, to showcase emerging and unrepresented artists whose work explored desire and expectation. |
