While the separation of Australian Aboriginal art from non-indigenous contemporary art is often problematic, Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi has maintained an impeccable reputation as a dealer and exhibitor of contemporary Australian Aboriginal art since 1987. Samantha Pizzi, Gabrielle’s daughter, has directed the gallery since her mother’s death in 2004.
As well as representing work by artists from the communities of Balgo Hills, Papunya, Utopia, Maningrida, Haasts Bluff and the Tiwi Islands, Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi presents the work of city-based artists such as Christian Thompson, whose photographic self-portrait Untitled – Yellow Kangaroo Paw, 2008 featured on the cover of Art & Australia. This balance between showing new work from communal artistic grounds in areas such as Aurukun, as well as innovations from indigenous artists with strong solo practices such as Leah King-Smith, brings a vitality to the Gabrielle Pizzi collection. It shows a receptiveness to developments in the work of the communities and individuals themselves, without being driven by market forces.
