The Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) is a not-for-profit exhibition and education centre. The centre is divided into six separate spaces, allowing for numerous autonomous exhibitions, as well as a night projection that can be viewed from the street after dark.
Far from being photography purists, the programming committee enriches CCP’s exhibition program through the inclusion of ‘photo-based’ arts, such as video and animation from emerging and established Australian and international artists. Arlo Mountford’s three-channel digital animation The Folly, an interpretation of three sixteenth-century Flemish paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, was recently shown concurrently with new video work from Melbourne-based artist Simon Zoric. In addition, significant bodies of work from interstate artists often visit CCP. In 2009 this included Tracey Moffat’s First Jobs series, first shown in 2008 at Sydney’s Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, as well as the On the Line exhibition curated by Anne Wilson, which included the work of contemporary American artist, writer and filmmaker Miranda July. CCP also publishes the online journal Flash, featuring reviews and essays by prominent arts writers, as well as inviting diverse thinkers and artists to write on ‘one image’ that has been significant in their lives. The piece ‘Stealing Souls’ from author Christos Tsiolkas is remarkable.
