It’s not uncommon to pass Festival Hall, on the western edge of the CBD, and see crowds of black t-shirts and faded jeans waiting for the night’s rock gig. This is, after all, Melbourne’s original house of rock ‘n’ roll.
Everyone from The Beatles, Oasis and Johnny Cash to Frank Sinatra and Shirley Bassey has played here. Like a mini arena, it consists of a huge floor space, surrounded by tiered seating to the back and both sides. If you’re game, the dance-floor/mosh pit will often be seen moving as one with the beat. Without much air circulation, you’re guaranteed to come out sweating (but feeling good).
It’s an all-ages venue, so just be aware of the designated drinking areas if you want a beer with your rock concert. And, generously, they are about the only venue to consistently publish set times for concerts in advance.
