t was a big first weekend at The Richmond Weekender. A day of rain didn’t keep the crowds away from the Homemakers Market and the Cavallero lads barbecued 100kg of meat for Fancy Hank’s Bar-B-Que at the Graham Canteen and still managed to run out by 2pm.

Speakeasy Cinema joins the fun this week with the first of four film screenings on Saturday nights. In the only remaining section of the once-sprawling Channel 9 complex, Foolscap have purpose-built a space for the screenings featuring Speakeasy’s signature unconventional curation.

First up this Saturday is Being Elmo, a documentary chronicling the man behind the familiar fuzzy red puppet, Kevin Clash. On March 17, Sally Rowe’s A Matter of Taste is another documentary, this time of a foodie bent, as it explores the career of New York City chef Paul Liebrandt and his love affair with haute cuisine. Marwencol screens on March 24, a film about a man who, after being injured in a bar fight, creates a one-sixth scale World War II era town as a kind of therapy. Finally March 31 sees the feature-length dance video Girl Walk // All Day blast onto the screen, following three dancers as they explore New York City to the tunes of Girl Talk.

Essential movie snacks, including fancy popcorn, ice cream and drinks will be available from the Graham Canteen on the night. Sounds like a pretty unique film experience.
