Sayle, which opens tonight (February 10) at Curtin House, is an exploration into the arbitrariness of nature by Melbourne artist James Eisen.

The assemblage itself, which is being installed in a somewhat improvised manner within a rigid time frame before the opening, avoids definitive meaning or explanation, creating a sense of mystery around the show.

Its unresolved nature, however, feels apt given that Eisen frames his practice within a discourse of spatial displacement, abstract relationships and the union of disparate elements, which in this case include zebra skin, concrete, epoxy, polyurethane, plastic sheets, wood, wire and clay.

A VCA grad who has exhibited in various group shows spanning Brazil, Berlin, Melbourne and Tasmania, Eisen rewards those known to his work with motifs, metaphors and props from previous shows. He realises that his work may not be easily interpreted at glance, but as it’s an ephemeral experiment, if you miss it, you may never get the chance again.
