f you don’t know about Saturday in Design (SiD) it might be because you are not in the design or furniture industry. But don’t let that stop you.
Saturday in Design is an annual trade event for the design community that involves some of Australia’s premier designer furniture, finishes, fixtures and lighting showrooms opening their doors to architects, designers, students and the design-savvy public. And it’s on this weekend in Melbourne (it’s hosted by Sydney every second year).
This year’s highlights include Great Dane, our go-to shop for Scandinavian inspired design, which will be warming us from the inside out with coffee by Clark Street Roasters and the launch of the first ever Muuto Concept store within a store.
Great Dane and The Beaufort have also transformed the raw loading dock at the back of Great Dane’s Fitzroy showroom into a warm, well designed pop-up whiskey bar. Dave Kerr from our new favourite dive bar, The Beaufort, will be serving up heart-warming shots of single malt Balvenie in appropriately Scandinavian surrounds. Think soft light, reindeer hide sculptures and a hard wood circular bar.
Jardan furniture have a furniture pop-up store in Collingwood. They’ve taken over the newly renovated Rokeby Studios and embellished the free-flowing space with their much-anticipated new collection.
Corporate Culture are giving away an array of impressive prizes including a limited edition 50th anniversary Swan Chair from Fritz Hansen valued at $17,698. They’re also launching a range of new products from HAY, Gubi and Ineke Hans. Head into their city showroom early for coffee and fresh pastries or later in the day for Belvedere cocktails.
World-renowned kitchen appliance brand Smeg will be showcasing their designs while artists transform Smeg FAB fridges into pieces of art. And outdoor furniture specialists Tait will be throwing a Great Gatsby style high tea complete with string quartet.
This is just a sample of what’s going on. So if you’re a design geek or just have an appreciation for excellent design, check out Saturday in Design this weekend and peruse some of the most innovative designs in contemporary furniture.
