Six-time Archibald Prize finalist Jasper Knight unveils his latest work, inspired by Australia’s busy working ports.

T

onight Metro Gallery opens six-time Archibald Prize finalist Jasper Knight’s latest exhibition, Roll-on, Roll-off. Well known for his images of industrial structures and machinery, his latest offering has been inspired by life on Australia’s busy wharves in Port Melbourne, Botany Bay and Port Adelaide.

The co-founder of Sydney’s Chalkhouse Gallery, Knight has exhibited in Australia, London, Berlin and Beijing, always with a focus on local sites for inspiration. Also a four-time finalist of the Wynne Prize for landscape painting, Knight’s work for Roll-on, Roll-off renders the intrinsic elements of the ports themselves entirely devoid of people. Using brilliant enamel paints on scavenged signs, Perspex, masonite and packing cases, Knight’s current works are bold mixtures of sculpture and painting that bring to life the danger of heavy industrial cranes, docks and ships.

The opening will be hosted by comedian Tom Gleeson (regular of The 7pm Project and Good News Week) with music by soundscape artist Hussey Sol-Man.

Roll-on, Roll-off opens tonight (March 30) and will show at Metro Gallery until April 17.
