Running over the final weekend – July 24 and 25 – it offers visitors the chance to uncover many of Melbourne’s architectural charms, with over 60 buildings currently involved.

Project Manager Sue Dight says that the program, now in its third year, was originally set up by the Future Focus group from the City of Melbourne council to run for two years, but has now become a permanent annual event.

“It’s been extremely popular because it has been an opportunity for people to get out and about and see some of the wealth of Melbourne’s architecture,” she says.

With over 50,000 visitors to thirty-two buildings last year, the event has been expanded to run over two days. Highlights this year will include the Shrine of Remembrance, the Goods Shed, Donkey Wheel House and Grocon’s Pixel building, most of which will be open each day from 10am until 4pm. But with limited space in each location, it’s probably best to purchase a program online before the event or at the MOH Information Hub at the Metlink office in the Town Hall.

The event also has an iPhone application, put together by one of their program partners Efront, which you can access to find out where the buildings are and how to get there by public transport. And in an effort to encourage people to use public transport to explore the city, the application also links to the Metlink website and uses their journey planner to map out your day.
