Tonight, High Street Northcote will become a pop-up, open-air gallery where art moves beyond its traditional confines.

A

celebration of art in unexpected and commonplace locations, High Street Northcote’s Northern Exposure festival challenges conventional notions of where art belongs. Now in its seventh year, the festival sees stores, shop windows, brick walls and unused nooks and crannies undergo creative and artistic transformations.

The festival program is divided into various categories – High Events, High Views and Small Works, Small Spaces – meaning that while you can purposefully head out to see an exhibition, you are just as likely to encounter an installation when you are simply wandering up and down the street.

Tonight, you can enjoy a glass of wine at any of the High Events exhibition launches, ogle shop windows participating in High Views or retrieve your imaginary magnifying glass for Small Works, Small Spaces, a forum for small-scale, site-specific artworks that is new to this year’s festival.

The official Small Works, Small Spaces tour kicks off at 7pm tonight and ensures that you won’t overlook any of the 24 installations. But of course, those with a sense of adventure and a keen eye can explore these works on their own at any time of the day or night.

Northern Exposure runs from June 17 to July 3.
