It’s the kind of furniture you won’t find at IKEA: original vintage pieces from some of Denmark’s most prolific designers and it’s available right here in Melbourne for three weeks only.

W
hilst collecting furniture from the Danish Modern movement for their personal collection, local couple Joel Malin and Amy Voterakis recognised a demand for this kind of quality product. With orders flowing in from friends and family they decided to open a shop.

The result is the Modern Times pop-up store in St Kilda, which is really more of an exhibition than a retail outlet. The space is filled with beautiful and functional pieces: rosewood bookshelves from Edmund Jorgenson, classic Hans Wegner day beds and beautiful Arne Vodder drawers sit alongside homewares and art by talented local designers.

“I love seeing the style of the 50s and 60s reinvigorated by contemporary designers. It really freshens things up and they work in so well with the vintage pieces,” says Amy.

Local designers include Designed in Brunswick’s screen-printed cushions and Retro Print Revival’s one-of-a-kind lampshades, among others.

The Modern Times pop-up shop will open be open from this Saturday (May 21) until June 12.
