uch like Copenhagen or Amsterdam, Melbourne is on its way to becoming one of the cycling capitals of the world. It’s only fitting that Melbourne Bikefest has emerged to celebrate the phenomenon. The four day event celebrates and discusses all aspects of cycling culture through bike rides, workshops, film screenings, market stalls and entertainment. There are forums on the role of design, women on bikes, the future direction of cycling culture and a great debate which promises to be far more interesting than any politicians. Bikefest is organised by a grassroots group of Melbourne cyclists wanting to bring together the ever growing cycling community and encourage more people to get into the saddle. Incredibly, it is organised by a group of volunteers passionate about cycling and bringing about social change. With performances by Aleks and the Ramps and Dancing Heals along with ‘ride in’ movies and an opening night party complete with valet bike parking, what more could a Melbourne cyclist want?
