The Mad Square At NGV

pening last week at NGV The Mad Square: Modernity In German Art 1910-37 is an exhibition that brings together over 200 works from the German modernism movement and shows the diversity of the art created in this period.

Germany in the early 20th century was a country in turmoil but from the political unrest came an uprising of optimism characterised by industrial development, innovation, and unprecedented freedom of expression. Avant-garde art movements such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, Bauhaus and New Objectivity flourished.

The most comprehensive exhibition of German modernism to be seen in Australia, Mad Square spans painting, photography, design, decorative arts, film, theatre and political satire, with works from the likes of artists Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Christian Schad, Hannah Höch, August Sander, László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky.
