Liquid Architecture Launches
Now in its 12th year, the Liquid Architecture festival continues to push the outer peripheries of sound and music. I f there’s one thing we’ve come to learn about Liquid Architecture, Australia’s longest-running national sound and listening festival, it’s to expect anything but big-haired, four-chord rock. Drawing on a host of the international sound art and experimental music community’s most renowned – not to mention lateral – exponents, Liquid Architecture has made it its mission to present the sonic in its most innovative and challenging forms.
This year’s festival, which was kicked off last night at Triple R Performance Space with a multi-speaker sound installation by revered Melbourne composer and installation artist David Chesworth, features one of the sound world’s more fascinating practitioners in Germany’s Marc Behrens. A multidisciplinary artist, Behrens works across musique concreté, field recording, installation, video and photography and has recently undertaken projects in China’s remote western regions, the Amazon Rainforest and – in something of an odd twist – founded an incorporated company as part of a social artwork. Behrens headlines the Melbourne Concert at the Triple R Performance Space this Thursday June 30 and will be joined by the likes of Dutch free-jazz guitarist Lukas Simonis, French experimentalist Pascal Battus, plus locals Dave Brown and improvisational duo James Rushford and Joel Talia.
