xpectations were high after the announcement that Bon Iver would be heading to Australia to play a special extended sunset set with his nine-piece band at Golden Plains. The US songwriter will perform songs from his latest record – the self-titled Bon Iver – a musical opus that traverses major folk, electro space travel and falsetto rock.
The distorted universe of Roky Erickson has seen him branded the godfather of psychedelic rock. Quite remarkably, the man tours here for the first time ever to perform an assortment of tunes from a seasoned and wild body of work. Look out for extensive material from his time spent in 60s Texan cult band, 13th Floor Elevators. Dig it.
Meanwhile, a recently cancer-stricken Nile Rodgers will also be making the voyage to front CHIC, one of the pioneers of the African American disco eruption of the 70s. With songs the likes of the celebratory Le Freak, Everybody Dance and Good Times in their repertoire, punters will experience a big funky finale to close out the festival.
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (aka Will Oldham) tours his latest record Wolfroy Goes to Town, along with his band, The Cairo Gang. His newest release finds the bearded burbler exploring similar themes to his seminal 1999 album I See a Darkness, so expect gloomy, meditative folk musings and apocalyptic visions. For lovers of David Lynch, Cormac McCarthy and the Antichrist.
Joining the above to perform at Golden Plains Sixxx are an almighty melange of artists ranging from Black Lips, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Charles Bradley, Roots Manuva, Urge Overkill, Wild Flag, Swedish harmony queens First Aid Kit, Seekae, Low and Australia’s ‘Hottest Kiss Tribute Band’ Kisstroyer.
Then there’s Oz surf rock icons The Celibate Rifles to enjoy plus Naysayer and Gilsun, Harmony, rockabilly fusion darling Lanie Lane, psych blues dudes Endless Boogie, local enigma Lost Animal, DJ/rupture, Canyons, This Thing, Hunting Grounds and The Avalanches’ DJ Dexter. Plenty to chew on for now, it seems.
The best way to get tickets is to enter the second round of the ballot at goldenplains.com.au before it closes at 10pm this Sunday, 23 October.
