Third Drawer Down initiate a free condom project with artists David Shrigley, Anne De Vriesa and Kill Pixie for 'The Art of Being Smart'.

By Megan Clune, 19th November 2010

A
rt and sex - its hardly a new combination, but art, sex and altruism? That’s a bit unusual. At the moment Melbourne treasure trove Third Drawer Down are doing just that by participating in Victorian AIDS Council and Family Planning Victoria Free Condom Project – The Art of Being Smart. 75 000 condoms are being given away across Victoria, with innovative packaging by artists David Shrigley, Anne De Vries and Kill Pixie created by Third Drawer Down.

As much as everyone likes free stuff, the project is not just for the sake of it. Rates of Sexually Transmittable Infections are becoming all too common among twenty-somethings, with studies showing a great deal of ignorance and a number of stigmas related to the topic. The art works are amusing, whimsical and provocative – not to mention collectable. Melbourne establishments Third Drawer Down, Alice Euphemia, Fat, Kinki Gerlinki, Chiodo and That Store, among others, are all contributing to The Art of Being Smart this month.
