David Suzuki swore he’d never return to Australia. But he's back for the premiere of the film telling his life story, screening this weekend at Moonlight cinema.

D

avid Suzuki will be 75 years old soon. A man with an amazing life story who has been in the media since the 60s, travelling the world raising awareness of climate change, amongst other issues. His awareness of the carbon impact of flying means he’s not keen on flying to Australia from his Canada home, but for the Australian premiere of the film of his life, he’s prepared to make an exception.

Three years ago, producer Lazlo Barna approached Suzuki to make a film touching on the issues he was passionate about. In response, Suzuki designed the concept for a high-budget flick telling the story of evolution. Barna and Director Sturla Gunnarsson attended some speeches given by Suzuki, however, and decided a much better story would be that of Suzuki’s life.

Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie is the result. “I’ve written two autobiographies, what a conceit, eh? To write two autobiographies,” Suzuki says. “I wrote one when I was 50 and then when I was 70, I said, ‘gee I left out a lot of stuff,’ so I wrote another one. People have followed my evolution but this film is a distillate of my thoughts and I’m very, very pleased with it.”

Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie is on at the Moonlight Cinema on Sunday, 20 February 2011.
