ndependent contemporary art journal Discipline caused quite a ripple on the Australian art landscape when it launched its inaugural issue in mid-2011. Published and edited by respected young art writers Helen Hughes and Nicholas Croggon, the journal’s missive was that of casting contemporary art from Australia and abroad in a new, intellectually engaged light.
More impressive was the fact that – via artist pages, extended interviews and research-based essays – Discipline actually managed to pull it off. Amid striking colour plates from Damiano Bertoli, Jackson Slattery and others, the journal’s writers and editors compiled some fascinating material on the likes of John Nixon, Marco Fusinato and Mexican artist Joaquin Segura.
Launching this Friday night (May 18) at Brunswick’s Sporting Club Hotel, Discipline No. 2 looks set to continue the trend. Featuring Francis Plagne’s consideration of Matt Hinkley’s microscopic sculptural works as its cover piece – intriguing considering Hinkley’s recent shift in scale and methodology – the new edition covers the work of Callum Morton and Bianca Hester, Ash Keating, Yukultji Napangati and sees Adrian Martin reflect on the state of art criticism. There’s also a guest-edited section by Maria Fusco and artist pages from the likes of Elizabeth Newman, the brilliant Sandra Selig, Paul Knight and countless others.
Discipline’s editors describe the journal as “unlike any other art publication currently available in Australia”. It’s a big statement. But on the evidence at hand, it’s hard to argue with.
