Industrial designer Benjamin Hubert is visiting Australia in August for some design events including a free public lecture hosted by Broadsheet, Great Dane Furniture and RMIT.

A

t only 27 years of age, Benjamin Hubert has forged a name as one of the UK’s leading industrial designers. His furniture and lighting designs take inspiration from raw materials and an awareness of the links between the product, process and craftsmen. In his short but prolific career, Hubert has won several prestigious awards including British Design Awards Design of the Year 2010 and EDIDA International Young Designer of the Year 2010.

In something of coup for Melbourne, Hubert will participate in Design: From Concept to Consumer, a free public lecture and panel discussion at BMW Edge at Federation Square. Joining Hubert on the panel – hosted by Kate Rhodes, Curator of RMIT’s Design Hub – will be Anton Assaad from Great Dane Furniture and our very own editor Caroline Clements, to discuss the entire design process from concept and manufacturing to commercialisation and marketing. The panel will consider design and product manufacturing, commercial realities and how to get onto a showroom floor, navigating the press and pitching products.

The work of final year students from RMIT’s School of Industrial Design will also be on show and the panel will discuss selected pieces.
