Perth based artist Bennett Miller’s performance/ sculptural work for the Next Wave Festival, Dachshund UN, is just that, a scale replica of a UN office in Geneva – with dachshunds.

By International Waters, 18th May 2010

B
ennett Miller has been working in the medium of ‘dachshund’ for a while now, having created a dachshund scale topiary maze for Perth’s Garden/Art/Action event in January. And now with his work for the Next Wave Festival, Dachshund UN, which unlike some cryptic art titles is just that: a dachshund scale replica of a United Nations delegate office in Geneva.

The architectural sculpture is on display in the Melbourne Museum forecourt for the duration of the festival (Thursday May 13—Sunday May 30). Each Saturday afternoon during the festival the 47 sausage dog delegates meet for an hour-long performance/conference on world issues.

The work, like much of Bennett’s work, is obviously political and questions the ability of nations to create a unified system of justice and resolve differences just because the environment is structured and mediated.

But more than anything else, it’s magical, chaotic and just really good fun.
