The guide refuses to leave any details concerning the modern cyclists journey untouched. With newspaper clippings on Melbourne cycling trends dating to the mid 1800s, the book has a historical yet personal feel, incorporating anecdotal experience from Hurst, his friends and his peers.

With guest contributions from a range of cycling Melburnians – from milliner Richard Nylon and Andrew Ashton of Studio Pip and Co., to postman Stanton Erskine – The Casual Cyclist’s Guide covers issues from motivation to lifestyle and all the things you’d pedal past in between, whether you are experienced or new to cycling.

Design-wise, the book alludes to 19th century Russian newspapers with design by Studio Pip and Co. and illustrations by Melbourne artist/designers Tin & Ed. Illustrations include hand-drawn maps of the key bike routes from all corners of Melbourne, like the Capital City Trail and the Docklands—Williamstown trail.

And while filled with insightful guides to cycling etiquette, attire, things to do and those to avoid, Matt Hurst also presents us with a philosophy on life paired with a huge dose of wit. Matt Hurst advises that as we cycle to work we should, “Slow down, reassess and remember that a bike ride to work is your chance to get one up on the grind.”
