he TarraWarra Museum of Art is a gem that's managed to fly under the radar for many, but it’s about time you got acquainted, if you haven’t already. Escape the city and head for the hills to take in the current Brett Whiteley exhibition, Connections, guest curated by none other than Whiteley’s ex-wife and well-known muse, Wendy.

Featuring works from the Besen’s collection (long-time admirers of Whiteley) supplemented by key works from the Brett Whiteley Studio and The Art Gallery of New South Wales, the exhibition includes 27 pieces – including paintings, prints and sculptures. It’s one of the largest exhibitions of Whiteley’s work Victoria has seen.

The trip out there is worth it for the museum’s award-winning architecturally designed building alone – an artwork in itself – which sits atop one of the Yarra Valley’s green rolling hills just outside of Healesville. Once you’ve had your art fix, pop in next door to the attached TarraWarra winery, grab a bottle and take it outdoors to laze around on the grass overlooking the pond. All this in just under an hour’s drive from Melbourne.
